Green is where the Heart Is for July 18, 2012

"I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody. " ~ Lily Tomlin

Serenity does not come easy if the bugs are hanging out in your Tranquility Zone.  I wanted to find some products that would ward off insects without endangering the health of my sweet grandchildren.  The ants seem particularly bad this season.
About four or five years ago I found a company that manufactures eco conscious cleaning supplies and other healthy products.
I was actually looking for a way to make some extra money and the information for Melaleuca products popped up on my screen.
I would not suggest these products to anyone until I used them, so I purchased the “big” enchilada, as Wayne Dyer would say, and was able to test out products they sell from all departments; household cleaning, laundry, bath and body, cosmetics, medicine cabinet, sunscreens, vitamins, pet care and more.
Once I used the products I was totally in love with them.  I also came to appreciate the fact that they come in a very concentrated form.  The $5.69 bottle becomes 6 full bottles when I add my own water and the savings is tremendous.
These products are not sold in stores.  I order online monthly and they are delivered conveniently to my home.  Melaleuca is a company that was founded in the 80’s even before it was ‘trendy’ to be green.  I have found this company a wonderful companion to natural remedies.
Cucumber peelings will get rid of black ants.  Spread peels by ant trails; the ants eat the peels and die.  Kill ants in lawns by pouring one pound of coffee grounds in a quart of boiling water over the anthill.
A very big anthill may require a larger amount of coffee and hot water.  If they have made it to your counter wipe down daily with cider vinegar…(unless counters are made of Marble….vinegar dissolves marble.)  Mix ½ cup baking soda with 1 Tbsp of powdered sugar.  Put the mixture in roach/silver fish areas.
Bugs eat the mixture and explode.  ALWAYS keep mixtures out of reach of children and pets.  Even “natural” products can cause bad tummy aches.
Ants are also repelled by Melaleuca Pre-spot Plus (don’t use on wood.)  To kill an ant colony, find the ant trail and spray Pre-spot (contains boric acid which attracts sugar ants.)
They take back the slow-acting poison, which works its way through the whole colony.  Also, combine 1 oz of MelaMagic and 1 oz of Sol-u-Mel in a 16 oz bottle filled with water  (great for black ants.)
I avoid putting harmful chemicals into our yard and living area but I want to enjoy a bug free space. I’m doing something about that, are you? Next week I will post
more recipes for “midges-be-gone” and how to make your own natural mosquito and tick spray.  Contact me for more information on Melaleuca.  xo mo
