Green is where the Heart Is for Oct. 17, 2012

"The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution." ~Paul Cezanne

As if it isn’t hard enough to plan meals within a budget, include foods from a well balanced variety and take the time to be able to make these foods with a tasty yet healthful outcome, now we have to be aware that all ‘basic’ foods are NOT created equal.  Some of us will not change our ways of cooking.  Meat and potatoes sufficed for our parents and will always be the staple of our diet.  Some of us will try to cook healthier as we watch our weight or our lousy cholesterol climb higher.  Some of us will actually wake up, and become conscious of the fact that who we are is a direct result of what we eat and not just the food but also the quality of the food.
The big difference is that an ear of corn today is not the ear of corn we ate as children in the fifties and sixties.  90% of corn grown in the United States today has been genetically modified.  “What difference does that make to me?”  you ask.   It  means that when you choose corn for dinner (or any of the thousands of products that may have corn derivatives in them such as acetic acid, alcohol, alpha tocopherol, artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners, ascorbates, ascorbic acid, aspartame, astaxanthin, through zea mays and zein) you may be getting a product that has been biologically engineered as opposed to the natural vegetable. This list is but an inkling of all the products A-Z that may contain corn.
Amy Sawyer, owner of Island Wellness Market, will be shedding light on this subject during a GMO AWARENESS CLASS at her store on Monday, October 29, 6:00 - 7:30, 1140 N. Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach, NC.  Cost is PWYC (pay what you can); $5-$10 suggested and a free goodie bag will be provided for all participants.   Carolina Beach Community Acupuncture and GRUB (nourishing our community through food education) support IWM in presenting this informative class.
Sawyer will present the truths and myths about GMO, Monsanto and your rights to know.  You will also be educated about what should be avoided and why, as far as safety concerns, the environmental impact and the security of farm and food.
California residents will be voting on this subject during the upcoming election.  According to Keri Brenner of the HealdsburgPatch, “Proposition 37 would make California the first state in the union to require that certain plant or animal products sold be labeled if its genetic material has been modified.
The law would also make it illegal for food companies to label genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, as “natural.”  Voting “yes on Prop 37” requires labels to say if your food was genetically modified.
There is a reason that GMO’s are banned or restricted in almost 50 countries.  It is time that the USA step up to the plate.
My job is to awaken you to ask the questions.  Amy’s job is to give you the facts and provide educated alternatives.
Your job is to decide whether you want to demand the best that you deserve for yourself and your family.  WARNING:  This information may be starling enough to start a revolution.  xo mo
