Green is where the Heart Is for August 28, 2013

“If something you want is buried, dig until you find it.”

Contributing Writer

Artful Living Group’s Featured Artist for the month of September, Lois DeWitt certainly has much to be proud of as she reflects on her career in the art field spanning half a century.
After earning a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, DeWitt received her MFA from Pratt Institute, NY attending on a full-tuition grant for graduate study.
She instructed art at Orange County Community College, the Brooklyn Friends School and created and directed a rural ceramic workshop in upstate NY where she taught wheel thrown and hand built ceramics to children and adults.
A move south found her teaching at the Miami Art Center and then supervising the North Miami Branch of the Metropolitan Museum.  During her time in Florida she wrote a cookbook for toaster ovens entitled, “Pop it in the Toaster Oven,” available today on Amazon and most bookstores.
Moving back north, Boston gave her the opportunity working as secretary to the Director of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, during which time Kidquilts and Capability, two enterprises creating colorful hand painted quilts for children and hand-sewn woolen capes were launched.
She continued in western Massachusetts, working with a fashion designer for an apparel firm at which time she renovated an old barn into a beautiful studio in Falls Village, CT teaching private classes in ceramics, painting, drawing and printmaking.
For nine years she coordinated with the Sharon, CT Teen Center to produce the Sharon On the Green Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring over 150 juried artists and artisans, an annual event, which is now into its 30th year.
Her next adventure culminated in becoming a certified Lighting Specialist, preparing her perfectly for her part-time work in the Lighting/Electrical department at the Myrtle Grove Home Depot where you may find her if she is not traveling with her 7 year old dog, Charley.
DeWitt’s love always included instructing art and she continues to teach small individual art classes in her home and at Artful Living Group in Carolina Beach.
She also has a website, which offers free online art classes in oil painting, acrylic painting, oil pastels, basic drawing, colored pencils, collage and discovering the artist within.
Always on the cutting edge she has created over 150 YouTube videos.  Her YouTube channel, Lois DeWitt, offers in-depth, step-by-step, information-rich art instruction and cooking demonstrations (from her cookbook.)
“Coastal Clouds” is a series of acrylic paintings of clouds, exploring light through the use of color interaction, saturation, tonality and contrast.  Using a combination of expressionistic and impressionistic techniques, DeWitt has researched atmospheric dynamics, interactions between landscape and sky, wind, weather and time of day.
