Green is where the Heart Is for September 25, 2013

fall to pieces through discord.” ~Sallust

Sunday, September 22 marks the halfway point till St. Patrick’s Day.  Anyone who has been on this island knows that we don’t take GREEN for granted around here on that weekend.  On Saturday March 15, 2014 The Steve Haydu St. Patrick’s Lo Tide Run will be held in Carolina Beach commemorating the 10th year.  This event is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who make it possible for local residents battling cancer to receive financial help during this devastating time in their lives.
Steve Haydu was a young entrepreneur (without health insurance,) newly married with a baby on the way when he received the overwhelming news that he had cancer.  One of his regular customers, Tim Reilly, an avid runner and father of many had recently lost his wife to that dreaded disease.  ‘TIMBO’ had the idea to organize a 5K 10K run and donate the proceeds to Steve and his family.  That first year there were barely 100 runners as the seed was planted.  Steve passed away in May of that year but his legacy continues.
Fast forward to the year 2013…..2,000 runners and over $67,000 raised of which over $55,000 has been distributed and has had an immediate and powerful impact on 13 families.  The momentum is growing.
This transparent organization stipulates ‘no strings attached’ dictating how the money is to be spent but commonly the recipients are behind in payments of many kinds.  When illness strikes one down taking away the ability to work, another level of fear is added to this unbearable situation.
Scott Betz, current president of the board said, “The impact of helping these families is unbelievable.  This money gives them that one opportunity to focus on getting well instead of being overwhelmed by their current circumstances.  I was the one that was allowed to hand them checks and experience their relief and joy and I thank you for that.  However, without the generosity of the sponsors, volunteers and runners this would not be possible.”
Join us Sunday September 22nd for an afternoon of raffles, live music, and fun for all ages including volleyball and cornhole tournaments at the Lazy Pirate from 1-5pm.  $15 event donation includes (2) free drink tickets and $5 worth of raffle basket tickets.  Rain date will be Sunday, October 6, 1-5pm.
The Lo Tide Run event logo contest has been extended till September 22nd.  Bring in your entries for a chance to WIN $100!!!  Lend us your artistic talent and help us help those that are being crushed financially because of cancer.  For more information go to or call Scott Betz at 910-368-9523. Finally, if you have not purchased the Lo Tide Run Cookbook you can get one for $20 at Carolina Beach Furniture, The Veggie Wagon, Island Wellness Market, The Island Gazette, The Chamber of Commerce, or Artful Living Group.
We may be halfway to raceday but recipients need our help all year long.  Join us in a day of FUN as we continue Tim Reilly’s passion…..believing that helping our neighbors is the reason we are all here.  xo mo
