Green is where the Heart Is for December 18th, 2013

My family loves bacon.  My neighbor Mike loves bacon.  Who doesn’t?  Just the smell of it conjures memories of childhood breakfasts with pancakes and eggs or the tasty summer lunch of a BLT with fresh slices of tomatoes on toast smothered with mayo.  Whether you like your bacon soft and bubbly or crispy the smell grabs you before your mouth ever touches it.  That is some powerful aromatherapy. 
Successful retailers understand the power to seduce customers into their space using scents. 
The smell of chocolate wafts down Market Street pulling customers into Kilwin’s to purchase ice cream, fudge or chocolates. April and Max might want to consider piping the smell of popcorn smothered in butter to pull customers into The Veggie Wagon, located at 608 S Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach. 
They are open Monday through Saturday 9am-8pm and Sunday 12pm-6pm.  You could call them at 910-805-3014 but then you would miss the scent if they had one. So Larson has a point.  If veggies are so good for us, why can’t they smell like bacon or chocolate or coffee?  Even if a person does not like the taste of coffee, they usually enjoy the smell.  The scent of coffee reduces stress as it causes molecular changes in the brain, which explains that much of the satisfaction we get from drinking coffee comes from the odorous effects as well as the taste or effect of caffeine. 
Project neuroscientist Yoshinori Masuo, head of the Mental Stress Team of Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology was interviewed on NPR and discussed about whether we should just sniff our morning coffee instead of drinking it. 
Wake up and smell the coffee, smell the bacon, smell the sugary sweet Britt’s donuts but eat your vegetables. 
Feng shui considers the language your space is speaking.  Our bodies interpret the space with all of our senses. 
How does your space smell?  Kind of a personal question, I know, but the way places smell gives as much information as the placement of the furniture, the color on the walls or the clutter in the corners. 
I was cooking cabbage the other day and my son came in and said, “It smells like Nana’s house in here.”  Celebrations at Nana’s house always consisted of traditional Ukrainian foods like cabbage rolls. 
It brought back fond memories for Jeremy.  OK.  There you have it.  The smell of vegetables can produce happy molecules in our brains.  Collards anyone?  xo mo
