Green is where the Heart Is for June 4th, 2014

“I don’t have to wait to realize the good old days.”
~Ziggy Marley

Contributing Writer

The coast of North Carolina was a great place to grow up being the youngest child of four and the only girl.  Beca Shaw remembers those days fondly.  The fact that they didn’t have a ton of money or rarely anything new was not important.  Her mother never bought new furniture but according to this young entrepreneur, they always had a really cool house.  Her mother taught her the value of how to take the old and make it new.  The Shaw family recycled, reused and up cycled before others knew what that term meant.  It seemed natural that this young daughter would gravitate towards using old thing to make new in developing her line of art pieces.
After high school Shaw started at the community college in Moorehead City and continued her education at UNCW where she earned her degree in education.  She married her husband, Ben, and at 24 gave birth to a daughter.  Their family was complete. Shaw found her calling as a pre-school teacher at Kure Beach Lutheran pre-school and she swears she will be there forever.  But that is not her only passion.   She  still loves to make old things new.
You will see her at local farmer’s markets, Arlie Moon, Lantana’s, BOC, and local art festivals including her favorite, the Christmas festival in KB Oceanfront Park.  She is one of the favorite artists at Artful Living Group and the featured artist for the month of June.
Come join us in welcoming this living green gal.  On Thursday, June 5th from 6:30 – 8:30 we will be serving refreshments and enjoying her art in the Artful Living Group Gallery room, 112 Cape Fear Blvd.  According to Beca, “ I am so thankful I am to be able to do this.
There is so much to be said for being able to do what you love.  These surely ARE the good old days.”  Come join the fun.  xo mo
