"A midge has a set of mouth parts which are like shearing scissors. They cut a hole in your skin and create a pool of blood and then they put their mouth parts in and suck from that." ~ Dr Alison Blackwell

Several years ago my sister Carol and I went on a spiritual pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona in Scotland.
Our group consisted of consciously evolved people seeking to experience the ‘thin place,’ that place that brings heaven and earth closer together.  The first evening we were called to gather outside to practice a tai chi form.  Unfortunately, so were the midges.  Midges are mosquito-like insects that attack and suck your blood making it near to impossible to attend to higher spiritual planes.  As these relentless assailants were molesting my body, I determined to create a non-toxic product to deter these pesky creatures.
Hence, ‘midges-be-gone’ was created.   I have told you before of my love for Melaleuca products.   The key ingredient in my formula is T36-C5 Pure Melaleuca Essential Oil or commonly called Tea Tree oil.   By combining 5 ounces of Moisturizing Hand Crème with 4 ounces of Renew Bath Oil, 4 ounces of Sol-U-Mel ( I prefer the lemon scent) and 9 drops of T36-C5 Melaleuca oil in a 16oz spray container you can create a deet free insect repellent that can be used on exposed skin a couple of times per hour.  Some prefer to simply use 1 teaspoon of Moisturizing Hand Crème with 5 drops of T36-C5.   This formula is not only safe for humans, but it is good for your skin, too.
A mixture to spray around doors, screens, trees and garbage cans would be 2 oz. of Sol-U-Mel with 5 drops of T36-C5 and 1 teaspoon of Tough & Tender in 16 oz of water.  These mixtures are not pesticides and will not stop the varmints from landing on you but it will deter them from biting you and ease the reaction that accompanies any bites you may get.
I can help you order these products if you like to save money and make your own.  When you compare $$$ of making your own to premade insect repellents I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
If you are the kind of person who does not have the time to do-it-yourself then I would steer you to Island Wellness Market at 1140-G North Lake Park Blvd, CB, NC.  Amy carries products that are healthy for your body and safe for children.   She also carries a complete line of essential oils for all your health, emotional and cleaning needs.   Have her make you a delicious fresh fruit smoothie while you are there.
No one should have to be subject to pests like midges when enjoying the outdoors.  Finding a safe and effective way to deter them is the way we do it in the ‘thin place.”  xo mo
