"People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not
something one finds, it is something one creates." - Thomas Szasz

Gabriel Lehman is a young man who has discovered that “giving back as much as he can and helping others,” returns to him many times over, a true “Living Green” perspective. Gabriel has worked as a carpet layer and a carpenter but when the pain in his hands became unbearable he chose to simplify his life. Over the next 2 years he discovered that hidden within him was a fresco artist.
His process begins as he builds a frame to which he adds plywood. He then adds plaster with a hardener using knives, and screens for relief. Next is black paint. He then stands back and stares to “see” what wants to appear. Burnt umber, the true color of the earth, expresses his palette. He creates two light sources, which give rise to depth as the light shows evidence of hidden objects. Warmth in his paintings comes from the sun, whereas the cooler colors of blues and purples come from the evening light.
At times he may be using his fingers and both hands. His work is a manifestation of his “imagination.” “No one tells me I can’t do it. I just do it,” he confides. Although he admits he is not great with words, his ability to see art everywhere in this “amazing world” is combined with his talent as a musician.
Recently he also began painting originals on canvas as his micro sensitive touch is tempered by the woven cloth. It is amazing to be so connected, so in tune with his mind’s eye.
Come to the opening reception for Gabriel at Artful Living Group on Thursday evening July 3rd 6:30-8:30. Unfortunately, Gabriel will not be present as he had an accident recently in Indiana and will not be able to attend but if we can figure it out we are going to Skype him in. The Lazy Pirate will be supplying their amazing starters in support of this fantastic artist. Adult beverages will also be served. Lehman’s show of originals and prints will hang in the gallery as our featured artist for the month of July.
For anyone who has been tracking Gabriel’s work throughout the years, it is unbelievable but it just keeps getting more and more emotionally complex. As I contemplate his work, I ask myself, “Is he fashioning these characters by himself or are they somehow using his imagination to come to life?” Once you study his work, you may ask the same question. xo mo
