Jesus Without The Junk: Funny or Really Heretical?

By: Molly Painter

In 1975, Saturday Night Live aired for the first time and has remained popular throughout the years; so popular in fact, that it began its 38th season in September 2012.  It has received the most Emmy nominations in television history.
It was the show to watch on Saturday nights.  Friends and I use to gather around the TV and faithfully watch it.  It truly was considered groundbreaking TV at the time.  Looking back, I cannot tell you what made us laugh so hard and why we wanted to imitate the actors on that program.  The show has always been daring, but what they did recently was something truly over the top.
I believe, though one never gets used to it, you become a little thick-skinned to atrocities and offenses leveled against Jesus and I like to think that sometimes His reaching hearts and souls may circumvent the ways I would normally consider usual~however…
Recently, a show aired that contained a fake movie trailer called “Djesus Uncrossed” that depicted Jesus and other biblical characters brandishing weapons and killing people.  The skit was full of profanities and gore.  It was done to spoof a Hollywood director famous for his unusually violent films.  Naturally, I did not watch this skit but I think to myself, “Has NBC no shame or fear?”
NBC is known for its anti-Christian shows so we shouldn’t be surprised at this latest mockery of our Lord and Savior.  What shocked me (and it takes a lot) were the responses I read.  A writer for one conservative website said that it was “funny but wrong.”  An extremely popular magazine, that will go unnamed, said it was “stunning in the best possible way.” Another comment I read said that many wanted to see it turned into a full-length film.
Are we a society that has become so unhinged and desensitized that we now want more of this?  No wonder we are looking at turbulent times to come.
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.”  Galatians 6:7
