March 2012 Programs at N.C. Aquarium at Ft. Fisher

BEHIND THE SCENES
• AQUARIST APPRENTICE - Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. - Check out a dirty job you’re sure to love.  Join staff on a behind-the-scenes tour and learn about Aquarium animals, what they eat, how they live, and how to care for them. Then, assist aquarists with food preparation and help feed the animals. Participants also observe aquarists during daily care and maintenance tasks. This limited opportunity is only open to 10 participants. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to smell fishy. For ages 10 and older.  Ages 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.  Fee: $25 for ages 13 and older, $23 for ages 10-12. Aquarium admission included. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

• Extended BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR - Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m., Monday, April 1, 2013 at 2 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2013 at 2 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2013 at 2 p.m., Monday, April 22, 2013 at 2 p.m., Friday, April 26, 2013 at 2 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. - Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at an Aquarium? Space for animal holding, husbandry, life support systems, and access to exhibits is hidden behind the aquarium walls. If you have ever cared for a home aquarium, you may have some idea of what it takes to operate a collection of salt and freshwater exhibits, with hundreds of animals. Accompany aquarium staff on a guided tour of animal quarantine, life support, food preparation, and access areas. This unique opportunity is limited to 10 participants. Children under 8 are not permitted. Children between 8 and 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fee: $15.00 for adults and $13.00 for children 17 and under. Aquarium admission included. NC Aquarium Society Members pay $9.00 per participant.
OUTDOORS & EXPLORATION
• SALT MARSH EXPLORATION - Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. - Hike the salt marsh trail and view first-hand the activities of marsh-dwelling animals and the variety of plants found in this rich environment.  Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  Fee: $15 for ages 13 and up, $13 for ages 8-12.  Aquarium admission included. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
• SURF FISHING WORKSHOP - Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 9 a.m. and Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 9 a.m. - This 3-hour workshop includes one hour of classroom discussion, then surf fishing on the beach nearby.  All equipment and bait provided.  Program is rain or shine, with extra activities added in event of bad weather (e.g., throwing a cast net).  Ages 10 and up.  Fee: $15 per participant. Aquarium admission is not included. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
ALLIGATOR EGG HUNT - Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 1 p.m., Friday, March 29, 2013 at 10 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2013 at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 10 a.m., and Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 1 p.m. - Come join the fun on our Alligator Egg Hunt. Kids get to see a live baby alligator and learn about these fascinating animals. They create their own special alligator egg basket and then search for candy filled “alligator eggs.” Recommended for kids 3-10, however all ages are welcome. Limited space is available. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $17 per child, includes admission to the Aquarium. $11 for NC Aquarium Members. Adults will need to pay admission to Aquarium. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY MARCH 20 FOR MARCH 23. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED BY MARCH 27 FOR MARCH 29 AND 30.
• BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS - Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 6:30 a.m. - This special breakfast program is perfect for all bird lovers. Bring your binoculars and join us as we go birding in the early morning hours around Aquarium grounds. The tour will be led by birder, Jim Parnell. Dr. Parnell taught ornithology at UNCW before retiring to spend more time on bird photography. He is co-author of Birds of the Carolinas. After a fascinating tour, enjoy a continental breakfast of coffee, juice, fruit, pastries and bagels. Immediately following this program Dr. Parnell  will be doing a book signing of his book, which is sold in the NC Aquarium Gift Shop. Stay to enjoy our new event Little Ripples, Big Waves. Recommended for all ages. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Fee: $15 for ages 13 and up, $13 for ages 8-12, $5.00 for age 2.  Aquarium admission included. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
