Open Labor Day

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is open regular hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - throughout the coming holiday weekend, including Labor Day, Monday, September 2. Animal feedings, live animal encounters and dive presentations, at 10:30 and 2:30, in the Cape Fear Shoals exhibit are among several programs offered daily, free with admission. In addition, Behind the Scenes tours and classes offered throughout the weekend are listed below. Pre-registration is required and can be made by calling 910-458-7468 or by visiting ncaquariums.com/fort-fisher.
• FRIDAY 8/30 - Behind the Scenes - At  11:15 a.m. Fee: $15 for ages 13 and older, $13 for ages 8-12; admission included. Wonder what goes on behind the scenes at the Aquarium? Animal holding, husbandry, life support systems and access to exhibits are hidden behind the aquarium walls. Accompany staff on a guided tour of animal quarantine, life support, food preparation and access areas.
• Extended Behind the Scenes - At 2 p.m. Fee: $20 for ages 13 and older, $18 for ages 8-12. Aquarium admission included. It’s feeding time, and you’re invited to watch. Visit the top of our largest exhibit, the Cape Fear Shoals, during an expanded tour behind the scenes. Aquarists feed sharks and schooling fish during the tour, offering a unique opportunity for close-up viewing.
• SATURDAY 8/31 - Canoeing the Salt Marsh - At 9 a.m. Fee: $25 for ages 8 and older. A 3-hour exploration of the Zeke’s Island Estuarine Research Reserve by canoe. Activities may include crabbing, seining or birding. Participant should be able to swim, be capable of sustained physical exertion and wear closed-toe shoes.
• Behind the Scenes - At 11:15 a.m. Fee: $15 for ages 13 and older, $13 for ages 8-12; admission included. Wonder what goes on behind the scenes at the Aquarium? • Aquarist Apprentice - At 2 p.m. Ages: 10 and up; Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $25.00 for ages 13 and up, $23.00 for ages 10-12; Aquarium admission included.Check out a dirty job you’re sure to love. Join staff on a behind-the-scenes tour and learn about Aquarium animals, what they eat, how they live, and how to care for them. Then, assist aquarists with food preparation and help feed the animals. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes.
• SUNDAY 9/1 - Behind the Scenes - At 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Fee: $15 for ages 13 and older, $13 for ages 8-12; admission included.Wonder what goes on behind the scenes at the Aquarium? NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located a short drive from Wilmington south of Kure Beach, on US 421. The site is less than a mile from the Fort Fisher ferry terminal. Hours: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day). Admission: $8 adults ages 13-61; $7 62 and older; $6 ages 3-12.
