NHCS Schools Compete in 2012 North Carolina State Science Olympiad

New Hanover County Schools students from Roland Grise Middle School, Ashley High School, Isaac Bear Early College High School and Hoggard High School represented NHCS at the 2012 NC State Science Olympiad competition on the campus of N.C. State University on April 27-28. One hundred middle schools and 109 high schools from across the state participated in the event.  Ashley High School (Head Coach- Gwen Abraham; Assistant Coach- Suzanne Sexton). Individual winners include: 9th place: Shock Value - Alex Hazeltine and Madison Swan. Hoggard High School (Head Coach Debra Ward; Asst. Coaches- Miranda Dungan, David Taylor, Jennifer Coston and Shari Thompson). Hoggard’s team placed 5th out of 43 qualifying teams from across the state.  Team member Logan Crowl was selected to lead Reynolds Coliseum full of high school and middle school students in the Student Competitors' Pledge during the opening ceremonies on Friday night. Individual winners include: 1st place: Bottle Rocket: Logan Crowl and Robert Loweth, 2nd place: Dynamic Planet: Luke Guo and Ali Wisner, 3rd place: Forensics: Rebecca Spaulding and Sarah Spaulding, 3rd place: Write It, Do It: Jennifer Jensen and Nellie Leddy, 4th place: Chem Lab: Rebecca Spaulding and Ryan Visser, 4th place: Water Quality: Rebecca Spaulding and Sarah Spaulding, 5th place: Astronomy: Robert Loweth and Frances Lu, 6th place: Remote Sensing: Taufik Raharjo and Aiwei Yan, 6th place: Rocks and Minerals: Luke Guo and Ali Wisner, 7th place: Microbe Mission: Jason Wang and Rosa Yang, 8th place: Shock Value: Robert Loweth and Frances Lu, 8th place: Sounds of Music: Jun Huo and Kammy Liu.
Isaac Bear Early College High School: (Head Coach: Bryan Bishop). The team placed 20th overall out of 43 teams.  Individual winners include: 10th place: Dynamic Planet: Mary Zielonka and Kinsley Morgan Roland Grise Middle (Head Coach: John Williams; Assistant Coach: Louise Miller). Individual winners include: 5th place: Write it Do it: Monae Duplessis and Cynthia Dong, 7th place: Mousetrap Vehicle:  Nick Gregoire and Cynthia Dong, 10th place: Towers:  Dom Scialabba, Yue Zhang and Nicky Lynch.
