Ashley High School senior, John Hare-Grogg, has been awarded the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists, eight of which were from New Hanover County Schools.
Principal Kenneth Bowen said, “Given the extremely tough competition, we are very happy for John to be named a NMSC scholar. He has earned his successes time after time with a contagious, positive attitude. I look forward to seeing John continue to grow as a learner and a leader.”
John was judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. He was selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
John will be attending Duke University in the fall and may use his award towards his studies there.
