New Hanover High School Senior Awarded University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Scholarship

New Hanover High School senior Jessica Adams has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Killian Family Old Well Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall and follow a pre-med course of study. Jessica was chosen as a finalist for the scholarship by a committee of faculty and staff from NHHS and was selected as the recipient by the Killian Family.
The Killian Family Old Well Scholarship is valued at $4,000 per year and is renewable for sophomore, junior and senior years while Jessica is attending Carolina.
The scholarship is awarded biennially to a NHHS graduate who has demonstrated academic excellence, leadership through school activities especially athletics, service inside and outside the school community, and strong character.  The Killian Family Old Well Scholarship has been made possible by a generous endowment to the university by the children of Bill and Betty Killian in honor of the support and encouragement provided by their parents throughout their lives.   The siblings - Rick, Tom, and Cindy Killian - are each graduates of NHHS and UNC-CH.
While attending NHHS, Jessica has been a student in the Lyceum Academy and a member of the Beta Club. Her leadership roles include president of the National Honor Society and team captain of both the women’s cross country and soccer teams. Jessica is also an AP Scholar and was a Morehead-Cain Scholarship nominee. She received the National History Day Outstanding Project for Women’s History and was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by the NHHS Class of 2012.  In addition to her school activities, Jessica is active in the community, serving as a volunteer for Relay for Life and Surfers Healing Autistic Camps and is a member of Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church. She is the daughter of Martin and Victoria Adams.
