Scholarships for Future Educators Awarded

The New Hanover County Board of Education has awarded Olivia Puckett and Kristen Vecchia, seniors at New Hanover High School (NHHS),  the 2012 Board of Education Student Scholarship.  In its mission to attract quality teachers, the Board of Education awards two $1,000 scholarships providing incentive, recognition, and financial assistance to outstanding seniors in a New Hanover County high school.  The scholarships are given to the accredited North Carolina college or university of their choice and will total $4,000 each over a four-year period.
Olivia plans to attend Meredith College after graduation.  She is the president of NHHS’ AVID program, vice-president of the Big Sis Club, and a senior class representative. Kristen plans to attend East Carolina University in the fall. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and an officer in the Hanover Singers Club.  Olivia and Kristen both will major in a teacher education program.
The scholars went through a rigorous selection process proving they excelled academically, have strong leadership potential, are active in their schools and community, and were recommended by teachers or community members.  For more information on the New Hanover County Board of Education Student Scholarship program, contact Lisa Burriss at (910) 254-4346.
