Not everyone may recognize the name, Gavin DeGraw, but chances are you’ve heard his music. During the years when the popular television drama, “One Tree Hill”, was being filmed on location here in New Hanover County at various sites, including Fort Fisher, fans of the show religiously tuned into the WB network every Wednesday night and began by singing or humming along to the familiar theme song, “I Don’t Want To Be”. The man who wrote and sang those catchy lyrics as well as brilliantly played rock and roll piano along with that bluesy guitar sound is Gavin DeGraw. Aside from composing and performing the theme song, he made three guest appearances on “One Tree Hill”, one of which was in the season finale. Laney High School students of 2007 know his name and his music well as, according to the WECT 6 News web site, they “were selected from more than 450,000 schools nationwide that were entered in Office Depot’s back to school promotion.” The prize was a special performance by DeGraw at Laney High School exclusively for Laney students. The web site also mentions that “Degraw said it was a funny coincidence that a school in Wilmington was chosen. Gavin DeGraw is a man of many talents, an accomplished musician, singer and songwriter who has dabbled in acting and more recently, dancing on “Dancing With the Stars”. His songs can be heard on local radio stations Sunny 104.5 or Z107.5 any day of the week, if you’ve heard the songs “Not Over You” or “Sweeter” they are the latest releases from his recent album titled, “Sweeter”. This is DeGraw’s fourth album and, he admits in a telephone interview, it is one he feels “really took it to the next level”. “On this particular album, for me as an artist, I feel like I am hitting my stride.” he says. “Sweeter” differs from his previous albums in that he collaborated with several well known producers who were able to co-write some of the songs, which is something DeGraw has usually done by himself. “Each of the producers brought different angles and different ideas”. Things went really well in the studio and he ended up with something he says he is “really proud of”. So proud in fact that
he says, “If I was to do it all over again, I would like to do it exactly the same way.” When asked what audio device he would take with him on a beach vacation, he responded “It would be some kind of mp-3 player, for sure, because you can’t carry cd’s they get all scratched up.”
Currently Gavin DeGraw is touring the United States and he will be in North Carolina this week appearing in Charlotte at the Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheater on Thursday, June 14 co-headlining with Colbie Caillat, who performed at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington in 2008.
This talented pair of artists with local connections is sure to be a crowd pleaser so if you’re looking to take a trip now that school is out, head west on Thursday for a summer night of live music.
