A copy of the original 1853 map of the entrances to the Cape Fear River and New Inlet used by Captain John Newland Maffitt, noted blockade runner during the War between the States and his activities in the Cape Fear area was donated by his great grandson, Robert D. Maffitt. Robert gave the map to the Fort Fisher #23235, United Daughters of the Confederacy, during their Military Awards Ceremony, at which he was bestowed a Military Cross for his service in Vietnam.
The map was to be presented to the Federal Point Historical Preservation Society for their History Center where the Fort Fisher #2325 holds its meetings. Mrs. Patricia Gray W. Bolander, President of Fort Fisher #2325, presented the map to Mrs. Leslie Bright, Chairman of the History Center and Mr. Barry Nelder, President of the Society.
