Island Montessori Charter School received its final stamp of approval this week in their journey to open a new Montessori charter school in our area. The school began an application process in April 2012 with the North Carolina Office of Charter Schools in Raleigh. The new school is tuition-free and available to any rising K-5 student who resides in North Carolina. Interested families should submit their application by April 12th at 4pm.
In the likely event that the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available in any class, a lottery will be held on April 26th at 4pm to randomly determine the allocation of available spots. The lottery will be held at the preschool campus at 222 Winner Avenue in Carolina Beach and will be open to the public. The charter school will provide students in Carolina Beach and surrounding towns with a high-quality Montessori education, said Jennifer Friend, founder of Cape Fear Village Montessori. Friend encourages interested families to attend one of four scheduled information sessions this month to learn more about the school. Applications will be available at the information sessions, as well as on the school’s website: www.IslandMontessoriSchool. com. While the school’s application was being reviewed, the charter council noted that adding another school option in the southern part of the county was one of the charter school's strengths, Friend said. Carolina Beach, Anderson and Bellamy elementary schools are all overcrowded. The school has plans to expand to grades 6, 7, and 8 in years 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively.
Montessori students are placed in multi-age classrooms and given more self-directed work than traditional schools, allowing students to learn at a differentiated pace. Island Montessori Charter School’s kindergarten students are part of a Montessori primary class that is located at it’s preschool campus at Carolina Beach. The preschool is also currently accepting applications. Students in grades 1 through 5 will be located in the new charter school location at 6339 Carolina Beach Road.
