New Hanover County Library offers free access to online courses

NEW HANOVER CTY - New Hanover County Public Library announces a new subscription to Learn4Life, an online service giving local residents free access to instructor-led online courses. Instead of a credit card all they will need is a valid NHC library card number when they enroll at http://nhcpl.libguides.com/Learn4Life.

“NHC Library has always been a resource for life-long learning in our community,” said Library Director Harry Tuchmayer. “When New Hanover County’s five-year plan challenged County departments to attract high quality jobs to our area by improving workforce readiness, the Library was ready to step up. We’re excited to make a cutting edge tool like Learn4Life available so local residents can develop work and personal skills conveniently and at no individual cost.”

Learn4Life is a product of Gale/Cengage Learning, a leader in library, classroom and adult learning markets. NHC Library’s subscription offers free access to hundreds of instructor-led online courses covering everything from health and wellness to creative writing, computer programming, GED test preparation and digital photography. Learn4Life courses are developed by expert instructors, many currently working at universities around the country.

New Hanover County residents are entitled to enroll in up to five Learn4Life courses per calendar year at no cost, and may study at NHC Library computers or wherever they access the Internet. Courses run for six weeks with two lessons per week, and new sessions begin every month.  The courses are Web-based with comprehensive lessons, quizzes, and assignments. A professional instructor coordinates every course by pacing learners, answering questions, giving feedback, and facilitating discussions.

“You need to enroll by Jan. 15 to get into the first session,” says Reference Supervisor Jimi Rider. “Start Your Own Edible Garden sounds like an especially great course for early 2014. Courses like Computer Skills for the Workplace, Resume Writing Workshop, and Marketing Your Business on the Internet should be popular year round—we constantly get questions in these areas.”

For more information, the catalog of Learn4Life courses, or to enroll in a course, visit http://nhcpl.libguides.com/Learn4Life. Users will be asked for their NHC Library card number during registration, and their accounts must be up-to-date with no charges pending to enroll.

New Hanover County Public Library offers citizens and visitors access to technology, information resources, and special collections relating to the area’s history and cultural heritage.
