New Hanover County Schools Annual Science Fair to be Held Thursday, January 23 at Murray Middle School

New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) will hold its annual Science Fair on Thursday, January 23, 2014, in the gymnasium of Murray Middle School, 655 Halyburton Memorial Parkway. Students in grades 3 through 12 will enter their projects in categories such as biological science, earth science, physical science, as well as technology/engineering.
Judges from local business, community, and government agencies such as City of Wilmington Stormwater Services, University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), Cape Fear Museum, NC Soil and Water Conservation District, Cape Fear River Watch will judge the students’ entries.
The project judging will take place from 4:15 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Although the judging will be open to NHCS Central Office staff and the media, it is closed to the public. The viewing of the projects for the public will take place from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony at the Minnie Evans Arts Center, 555 Halyburton Memorial Parkway, Wilmington, NC, from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Selected projects from the NHCS winners will advance to the regional science fair competition, which will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014, in Hanover Hall on the UNCW campus. For more information, contact Kim Bierstedt, NHCS Science Lead, at (910)254-4335. Schedule and location:
• 3:15-4:15 - Registration and Project Set-up;
4:15-6:00 - Project Judging - Each student should remain seated in front of project until interviewed by two judges (please bring a book to read while waiting). Following judging, the student is dismissed and may return for public viewing at 6:00 p.m.
The judging is a CLOSED session except for judges, central office staff and media.
• 6:00-6:45 - Public Viewing of Projects - The Murray Middle School Snack Bar, which is located beside the gym, will be open. Pizza, soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.
• 7:00-8:00 - Awards Ceremony - Minnie Evans Performing Arts Center which is located Adjacent to Ashley High School
