This visionary tribute to life on the roadside received a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical when it opened on Broadway in 1982 following a triumphant off-Broadway run. Set on rural Highway 57 in North Carolina, the story follows four hard-working fellas at a rest stop gas station and the waitresses with whom they have a special kinship. This rollicking musical, in which the actors double as the band, is a hilarious and ultimately uplifting celebration of the value of friendship and life’s simple pleasures. Starring The Brent Stimmel Band (Les Britt, Nick Loeber and Brent Stimmel) with Amanda Hunter, Michael Lauricella and Rasa Love.
A rave in The New York Times opined, “[Pump Boys… is] both musically and theatrically a triumph of ensemble playing…totally terrific, it is so much fun.” Directed and choreographed by Debra Gillingham with music direction by Jonathan Barber.
