Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church is pleased to announce that the second week-end of November, 2013 will mark the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the original chartering of the church on Nov. 7, 1943.
The Rev. Dr. Charles D. Elliott, who served as our pastor from April 1988 to October 1992 and went on to an eminent career in the wider Church, will be our guest preacher on Sunday morning, November 10.
Other events that week-end will include a festive concert by distinguished baritone Harold Bost on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 3:00 P.M., which is open to the public. Voluntary donations will be accepted.
Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church was organized with 23 charter members. Worship services were held in the Town Hall until the Methodists offered us the use of their sanctuary on Sunday evenings.
Presbyterian Church (PCUS) ministers were sent to this area by the Defense Service Council throughout World War II. The cornerstone of the original church building on Charlotte Avenue was laid on December 9, 1945. Benches from a battleship that was being re-fitted were acquired from the Ft. Fisher Army Base; four can still be seen in the new church hallway, along with the original communion table and pulpit Bible.
In the mid-1980s, CBPC built and moved into its current building on Highway 421, just south of Snow’s Cut Bridge. (The original church building is now the popular Deck House restaurant; the bell from its distinguished bell tower is on display in the new church.)
The church building on Lake Park Boulevard, which was expanded in 2012 to almost double its original size, has afforded us the opportunity to serve our community, including space and resources for Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops, Al-Anon, Meals on Wheels, National Alliance on Mental Illness, and many other community functions.
Today, in addition to our Pastor, the Rev. Keith Grogg, the church employs professionals for music staff, Christian education, and office administration. Weekly Sunday services are held at 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. with Sunday School classes for all ages at 9:45 A.M. and abundant programming throughout each week. More information can be found at the church’s facebook page or on the website, cbpchurch.com.
Events at CB Presbyterian Church Include: Morning Breakfast, Concert, and BBQ
We are so looking forward to the second week-end in November, when we will celebrate 70 years of Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church--its members, its mission and its ministries!
