Funds to support advanced cardiac technology in the Heart Center
Social package tickets are still available for the 20th annual Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament, being held May 4-5 at the Country Club of Landfall. Proceeds benefit the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation, which supports special programs and services within the hospital. This year’s tournament will help fund the purchase of new technology that helps patients in cardiac arrest.
The Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine is used by doctors for patients whose heart and lungs are temporarily damaged. The machine performs the functions of the heart and lungs and allows these organs to rest and recover by circulating oxygenated blood through the body. The ECMO machine will draw blood from a large vein in the body, and when passed through the mechanism, it adds oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide. The blood is then returned and circulated through the body, possibly saving the life of the patient.
“The new ECMO machine will be a wonderful addition in our Heart Center,” says David Parks, vice president of cardiac services at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “The newest models are smaller and more efficient, helping to take some of the work load off of the patient’s heart so that they can become stabilized more quickly.”
The Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament is organized by the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation, a nonprofit, fundraising affiliate of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Earlier tournaments raised money for projects including the construction of the Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital, exercise equipment in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center and wireless technology at Cape Fear Hospital.
This year’s Coastal Classic festivities include two days of golf, a cocktail party and silent auction, and an award ceremony and after-party at the Landfall Hampton Inn & Suites, featuring Nashville recording artists The Mulch Brothers. Social packages are available for those who would like to attend the evening events without the golf. Anyone interested in attending the events should contact Jamie Thompson at 910.815.5042 or visit the website at www.nhrmcfoundation.org/coastalclassic.
