Screenings for early detection of lung cancer now available at New Hanover Regional Medical Center

WILMINGTON, NC - Lung cancer claims the lives of thousands of men and women every year, in part because so many cases are diagnosed in later stages, making them harder to treat.  New Hanover Regional Medical Center is offering screenings for patients with a history of cigarette smoking or exposure to lung cancer-causing agents that can help detect lung cancer in its early stages.
The Lung Computed Tomography (CT) Screening is a quick, painless test in which patients experience only slightly more radiation than they would get from a traditional x-ray.  The screening is available at two NHRMC Health & Diagnostics locations: NHRMC’s Cape Fear campus on Wrightsville Avenue and the NHRMC Health & Diagnostics location on Military Cutoff Road.  The screenings are read by a board-certified radiologist and results are shared with the patient by a written report from the patient’s referring physician.   “Studies have shown that early detection can help save lives and we are very pleased to offer this test to those who may be at risk,” says Steven Crawford, M.D., an interventional radiologist with Delaney Radiology. “The test is quick and easy with relatively little downside.”
Qualified individuals include those ages 55-74 who have smoked at least an average of one pack a day for 30 years, including people who still smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, or people ages 50-74 who currently or in the past have smoked at least an average of one pack a day for 20 years and who also have at least one other risk factor for lung cancer.  A physician referral is required. Insurance plans do not currently cover the cost of Lung CT Screening. The fee for this exam is $180, payable at the time of the exam.  Anyone who has completed the smoking cessation class offered by NHRMC will receive a discount for the lung screening.  Persons participating in the lung screening qualify for a discount to the smoking cessation class. For more information on the lung screening, call 910.262.0330.  If you would like more information on NHRMC’s smoking cessation course, call Iris Baker at 910.452.8297.
