Gift will establish the Dan and Sheila Saklad Oncology Education Endowment
WILMINGTON, NC - The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Dan and Sheila Saklad Oncology Education Endowment named in honor of a $100,000 gift from the Saklads. Earnings from this endowment will support and enhance educational needs, including scholarships and continuing education stipends for the nurses and staff at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center and oncology services.
“Dan and Sheila Saklad have been supporters of New Hanover Regional Medical Center for several years and we are honored by their gift,” said Aline Lasseter, vice president of development & executive director of the NHRMC Foundation. “The healthcare professionals that choose oncology as their specialty are truly unique and remarkable people. Thanks to the Saklad’s generosity, we will be able to continue to provide them with the training and ongoing education to be the best in their field so that future generations of patients with cancer will be able to receive the excellent care our community has come to expect from NHRMC and the Zimmer Cancer Center.” The Saklad’s decision to fund this endowment was based on their own experience with New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the Zimmer Cancer Center. In March 2012, Sheila was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and since then, the Saklads have developed a relationship with the caregivers at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center and in the NHRMC oncology unit. “We have been so impressed by the care we have received at New Hanover Regional Medical Center,” say the Saklads. “Everyone has been professional and compassionate and so many have gone out of their way to ensure that we were well cared for. We feel that this medical center is a valuable resource for the community and we wanted to give back to the caregivers who have done so much for us.”
The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation is a not for profit 501 (c) 3 organization whose mission is to support NHRMC through the development of philanthropic resources and to promote understanding of healthcare needs in our community. Gifts to the NHRMC Foundation provide vital support to help fund special projects, provide continuing staff education, fulfill mission services and purchase life-saving equipment for New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center is southeastern North Carolina's only community cancer center dedicated solely to the diagnosis, treatment and support of people with cancer. It houses outpatient services, including chemotherapy, infusion therapy and radiation therapies. It also hosts NHRMC's clinical trials program, giving local residents a chance to participate in the most current clinical trials, and allowing patients to have access to the latest chemotherapy drugs, and radiation and surgical protocols when appropriate.
