New Hanover Regional Medical Center ranked among "Best Hospitals" for 2013-14 by U.S. News & World Report

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has received national recognition for excelling across a broad spectrum of patient care in U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of Best Hospitals.  NHRMC was recognized among the Best Hospitals in North Carolina and the Coastal Plain area indicating high proficiency in serving the needs of patients.  NHRMC was also recognized as high-performing in Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Orthopedics and Pulmonology. “The team of physicians, nurses and staff at New Hanover Regional Medical Center work hard every day to deliver high quality patient care to everyone who comes to us,” said Jack Barto, president and chief executive officer of New Hanover Regional Medical Center.  “This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our team and I am proud of this accomplishment.” The annual U.S. News Best Hospital rankings, now in their 24th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. For the 2013-14 rankings, 147 of the approximately 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated were ranked in at least one specialty. The rankings are based on an extensive analysis that combines measures of performance in three primary dimensions of healthcare: structure, process, and outcomes.
Structural measures include hospital volume, technology and other resources that define the hospital environment, measured in the American Hospital Association (AHA) annual survey. Process is represented mostly by a hospital’s reputation for developing and sustaining a system that delivers high-quality care, determined by a survey of board-certified physicians. Outcomes performance relies on patient survival and safety.
“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best.”
