Do you have gum disease?
Gum disease is the process of plaque gradually building up on your teeth over time, irritating the gums and eventually eroding them away.
There are two classifications of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which shows up as having red swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing.
While the more sever stage that follows, periodontitis, can actually start causing the gums to recede and pull back from the teeth. This can eventually cause bacteria buildup where the gums have pulled away from the teeth, which can then cause the teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. Not a good look for anyone..
What are the Signs of Gum Disease?
Gum disease has a few very tell tail signs. These symptoms may include:
• Red swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing (healthy gums should be light pink)
• The gums may start receding or pulling down and away from the teeth making your teeth look longer than usual
• Chronic bad breath can be a symptom due to the buildup of bacteria in the mouth
• In severe cases, your teeth may actually start loosening or even falling out
If you are noticing some of these symptoms then you should contact your dentist in order to schedule an appointment and get a game plan in place to stop the digression process ASAP, as once there has been damage done from gum disease you can't reverse the process. All that you can do is keep it from progressing further. Advice on what to do if you have Gum Disease. Once you have determined that you have gum disease, regardless of it's advancement, you can start doing a few simple things that can help you stop this negative process from getting worse. Here are a few tips:
1. Consult with your dentist first as to ensure you're taking the correct steps
2. Get your daily dental hygiene habits up to snuff: brushing 2-3 times a day, flossing daily, and using mouthwash
3. If you use tobacco products, try to stop as they can contribute greatly to the progression of gum disease
The bottom line with gum disease is to act fast! Every day that you fail to do the things necessary to correct your gum disease is one day closer to you looking like a hockey player, except without the paycheck to go along with it.
