Bozart Family Dentistry Tip of the Week: Teeth Whitening; How does it Work?

In order to understand how teeth whitening actually works, we need to first go into a brief description of the different parts of the tooth. On the outside layer of the tooth is your enamel. Tooth enamel is fairly colorless and semi-translucent. So your tooth enamel is not the part of the tooth that actually gets whitened like many may think. What is whitened is the next layer of your tooth, called the dentin.
The dentin of your tooth is usually a yellowish color, but can also be grayish in color. It's the color of the dentin that gives the color of your teeth. So what happens when you get your teeth whitened is that the whitening solution actually opens up the pores of your tooth enamel, eventually making it's way down into your dentin, thus causing the whitening effect that you're looking for.
Now if you don't get the whitening results you we're looking for on the first try, don't worry. It usually takes several treatments to achieve the results you're seeking. Plus, over time your teeth will naturally pick up stains again from food, beverages, smoking, and pretty much anything that you put in your mouth. For this reason, you should get your teeth whitened at least once a year in order to maintain whitening effect that you desire. It's a fairly simple process that most don't understand, so hopefully this can be helpful and make you more comfortable with the teeth whitening process for the next time you get your teeth whitened!
