Summer has officially kicked-off and now you can enjoy Britt’s Donuts 7 Days a Week!  It has been more than 70 years since Britt’s first opened their doors and started serving their famous donuts which have remained an unrivaled treat for Pleasure Island residents and visitors.  A little more than a decade after the shop opened a young man named Bobby Nivens got a job working for Mr. Britt in his soon to be famous donut shop, never knowing that one day he would be the one keeping this Pleasure Island staple alive and well into the next century.
Nivens is the current owner of Britt’s Donuts and has stayed true to the original concept that made Britt’s famous.  Their simple menu offers but one style of donut, which after one bite will set the standard by which you judge all others.
Their traditional deep fried glazed donut is so good that it would be a travesty to soil it with any additional toppings or flavorings.  The fluffy and soft insides of their donuts are unlike any other you will ever encounter and the perfectly browned exterior serves as the perfect base to hold the sweetest and tastiest glaze your tongue will ever have the pleasure of meeting.  It is the simplicity of making an unparalleled product that has maintained a consistent first place status among most anyone who has ever found themselves in the shop or lucky enough to have a friend bring home one of those signature white paper bags.  As with all great things that are expected to come to an end at some point, Britt’s has an uncertain future when the original owner decided it was his time to retire, but the tradition of always having a boardwalk with Britt’s Donuts was saved for future generations when Bobby Nivens, who had remained a long time friend of Mr. Britt in the years since his adolescent employment at the shop, worked out a deal to take over ownership of the then already famous Britt’s Donuts in 1974.  Nivens has remained true to the recipe and thus kids and adults alike can today still enjoy those same delicious donuts that their parents and grandparents enjoyed as children many years ago.
While the donuts are the main attraction just going to the shop and seeing the crew in action is an experience in itself.  Using the very same recipe and methods that has made their donuts the best for more than 7 decades, Britt’s employees can be seen through the viewing windows, working like a machine, taking the freshly produced dough and turning it into a glazed masterpiece.  The nostalgic setting, use of proven methods, and quality of their product makes you wish that everyone could put this level of commitment into staying true to original successes.  So if you have never had the pleasure of tasting a Britt’s Donut now is the time.  If you are already a fan then rejoice because those donuts you know and adore are available for another wonderful summer!  Britt’s Donuts is located on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.  You can see the back of the building from Canal Drive or just look for the line of excited patrons that will be a constant sight on the Boardwalk throughout the season.  As of  Memorial Day they are open 7 days a week from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and remain on those hours until Labor Day when they will go back to weekends for a few weeks before closing up for another winter.
Though nothing can compare to a Britt’s donut fresh from the shop I suggest stocking your freezer before winter as a way to remind yourself what you have to look forward to in the spring.
