For five years Marie Whitley has been teaching dance at the Kure Beach Community Center. The group of children she was teaching began to grow so much she decided to open a studio in Carolina Beach late last year.
She offers classes to all ages, beginning with the Little Mermaids who are from 5 to 7 years old, in addition to this group, she offers three different niches. The dance team, which when fall softball season begins they will dance during the seven inning stretch.
They are now learning 10 one-minute routines during the summer. The Pom-Pom team which is a full-fledge dance team and the Recreation group, this is for a child that just wants to learn to dance, if they do not want to compete or perform that is alright, but it is available to them if they want.
With the expansion of Pleasure Island Dance Company, Whitley has hired experienced dancers to assist in teaching the classes. Her right hand instructor is Tara Washburn; Austrin Garcia who assists in hip-hop and Sydney Miller. Each instructor complements each other with their expertise of dance style and is proficient in all styles of dance.
