For a different way to taste some of the foods and learn about Carolina Beach try doing the walking tour, Tasting History. Jeff and Brinley Christner are in their third year of this unique, fun way of sampling foods while giving historical and fun facts about the island. Tasting History takes you through the streets of Carolina Beach and into a few restaurants to taste some of what they have to offer. The tour begins at the Veggie Wagon and ends at the Fudge Boat and it takes about two and a half hours to complete.
When the Christners began they consulted Amy Thornton to help with the script and to help with the tours, it was important to them to have the factual events of the island. Thornton is now at Cape Fear Museum as the education manager, so they have historian John Moseley, the assistant site director of Fort Fisher, guiding you through the streets telling you the history of the island.
The cost is $30 and includes red and white wine tasting, lemonade tastings and food samples at the different locations throughout the town. One of the stops is at Havana’s, do you know that this is the oldest cottage-style building at the beach. Not to give out too much information, but there are some interesting details that they share throughout the tour.
What a great way to enjoy a dinner and soak in the history. There are also some fun activities during the tour and give-a-ways to add to the experience.
