John Schnatter knocked out a broom closet in the back of his father’s tavern, sold his Camaro and bought used restaurant equipment and began selling pizzas out of the back of the restaurant. So, the story of Papa John’s began. He knew from the beginning he could make a better pizza by using fresh dough and ingredients. He opened his first restaurant in 1984. Papa John’s is a take-out or delivery restaurant. The pizza starts with fresh dough and the result is a light and fluffy crust. To create your own pizza, you have two options either the original hand-tossed dough or thin crust pizza. The sizes begin at a 10-inch to an extra-large 16-inch pizza.
There are a variety of meats and vegetables to choose from, cheese and if you like you can pick extra seasonings. There are also specialty pizzas. The choices are Spicy Italian, The Meats Spinach Alfredo, Tuscan Six Cheese, Bar-b-que Chicken and Bacon, Garden Fresh, The Works and John’s Favorite. And, there are also sides available such as Papa’s wings, chicken poppers, cheesesticks, garlic parmesan breadsticks and plain breadsticks. Also available are dipping sauces. For dessert, cinnapie, which is made from original dough topped with sweet cinnamon filling and brown sugar streusel and then drizzled with white icing.
Billie Jones has been manager of the Monkey Junction restaurant for six months and is looking to grow the restaurant. She said they are family minded and that Papa John’s is based on family values. They have lowered a lot of prices and have made better categories making the menu easier to look at.  They never stop trying to surpass their previous best.
They will deliver to Fort Fisher and the Masonboro Loop South. They also have a vehicle that can deliver your pizza to the “North End” of Freeman Park. The vehicle is equipped with a small oven to keep your pizza warm. Papa John’s that delivers to this area is located at 6132 Carolina Beach Road, Unit 1, Wilmington, next to Salt Water Marine.
