Island Roast Coffee is a micro coffee roaster locally owned and operated by Ken and Debbie Hodges of Carolina Beach specializing in premium coffees from around the world. They roast daily in small batches to ensure optimum quality, freshness and flavor. Most of the coffees are roasted, packaged and shipped within 24 hours of being ordered.
As a former Green Beret in the U.S. Army Special Forces, owner and roaster Ken Hodges has lived and worked in the coffee growing regions throughout South and Central America and Africa. “I was meeting with people in Ethiopia and watched some guys roast coffee beans in a metal pan over an open fire. Once the beans were roasted, they ground them up and made the best cup of coffee I had ever tasted. That was my first exposure to coffee roasting.”
Ken first started roasting his own coffee as a hobby and would give bags of coffee to friends and family, but soon had people that had tasted his coffees ask if they could purchase larger quantities.“About nine months ago I decided to stop consulting for the government and start roasting full time. I had been traveling for five years and decided I wanted to do something I was passionate about, roasting coffee!” Ken said.
All of the coffees offered by Island Roast are premium Arabica bean coffees roasted in small batches to ensure the best flavor possible. Because of the differences in altitude, rain fall, soil and processing throughout Central/South America, Indonesia and Africa all coffees have different roasting levels that bring out the best flavors of the beans. “I’ve developed roasting profiles for the approximately 25 different beans that we have in stock, it’s my own little science project every time I start roasting.”
Besides the long list of single origin coffees, coffee blends, flavored coffees and decafs available on their website at www.islandroastcoffee.com, they have recently added holiday flavors and gift boxes to their long list of products. The gift boxes will include fresh roasted coffee, 16 oz. stainless steel travel mugs, French presses and custom imprinted scoops. This is the perfect gift for the coffee lover on your list. These gift boxes are just in time for the Christmas season, but they are also great for birthdays, anniversaries, housewarming, weddings, or just because. There are several holiday flavors that have been added to their website with the best sellers being pumpkin spice, butter rum, and Mistletoe Mocha which has a nice chocolate mint flavor.
Island Roast Coffee also supplies coffee shops and restaurants with coffee, locally The Hang Ten Grill and Majik Beanz Coffee Shop both serve blends developed just for them. Recently Island Roast Coffee participated in the Salty Paws Festival and the Dragon Boat Regatta, and will also be helping out at Murray Middle School teaching the kids about coffee and helping them set up a “coffee bar” for parents and teachers.
