2012 General Election Absentee One Stop Early Voting Starts Oct. 18th

NEW HANOVER CTY - One Stop Absentee Voting (Early Voting) will begin on October 18 and end on November 3. There will be five sites open in New Hanover County.
• NHC Government Center, 230 Government Center Dr., Suite 38.
• NHC Senior Center, 2222 S. College Rd.
• CFCC North Campus, 4500 Blue Clay Rd., Room 117 in the Applied Technology Building.
• NHC Main Library, 201 Chestnut Street - 3rd floor.
• Carolina Beach Police Training Room, 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd., Town Hall.
 All sites will be open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Saturday November 3 when the hours will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Those registering in-person at a One Stop site will be required to show proof of residency. Acceptable forms of proof of residency include
• A North Carolina driver’s license with current address
• A utility bill with name and current address
• A telephone or mobile phone bill
• An electric or gas bill
• A cable television bill
• A water or sewage bill
• A document with name and current address from a local, state, or U.S. government agency, such as:
• A passport
•  A government-issued photo ID
• U.S. military ID
• A license to hunt, fish, own a gun, etc.
•  A property or other tax bill
• Automotive or vehicle registration
• Certified documentation of naturalization
• A public housing or Social Service Agency document
• A check, invoice, or letter from a government agency
• A birth certificate
• A student photo ID along with a document from the school showing the student’s name and current address
• A paycheck or paycheck stub from an employer or a W-2 statement
• A bank statement or bank-issued credit card statement
To avoid delays at the polls on Election Day, the New Hanover County Board of Elections Office is encouraging residents to check their voter information now.
Elections Outreach Coordinator Sally Shepherd says this is especially important for residents who recently have moved, changed their name or are new to the county.
“If you fall into one of these categories, you should update your voter registration now,” said Shepherd. “This will ensure you receive voter information at the right address, and that come Election Day, you will avoid challenges to your vote or having to vote by provisional ballot.”

From there, residents should click “Check My Registration” in the list on the right side of the page, select “Show me my Voter Information,” and follow the prompts to verify their information.
If the record is incorrect or cannot be found, the voter will need to complete a new registration and send it to the Board of Elections.  The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 general election is 5 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2012.

Public Affairs Manager Carey Disney Ricks adds that the effort to prepare for the upcoming election has now grown to include coordination with WAVE Transit. “Because of this coordinated outreach, the public will also have access to polling locations and transportation options on Election Day.”
New Hanover County and WAVE Transit websites are being modified to provide information about polling locations and routes to polling places. In addition, WAVE Transit has graciously agreed to wave ridership fees on Election Day.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to work with WAVE Transit to provide information and the mechanism for all New Hanover County citizens to exercise their right to vote” said Ricks.
