NEW HANOVER CTY - The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners met Monday December 3, saying goodbye to Commissioners Jason Thompson and Rick Catlin and welcoming newly elected members Woody White and Beth Dawson. Commissioner Jonathan Barfield was reelected in November.
Commissioner Jason Thompson gave a heartfelt parting speech during the meeting.
Thompson was presented with a plaque recognizing his years of service.
Chairman Jonathan Barfield spoke of Thompson not only as a fellow commissioner but also as a close family friend.
Thompson quoted Dr. Seuss saying, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." He asked if anyone knew who he was quoting and his son Mason answered correctly.
He explained, "Thank you to my family. To my wife Shannon who never signed up for all the turmoil and hecticness and sometimes even the nastiness that comes along with elected service. And for your grace and forgiveness when people stopped you in parking lots, grocery stores, where you worked and even in our neighborhood to tell you what a total bum and real jerk your husband was. To them I apologize and to you I say thank you."
Thompson said his two sons have no memory of their father being anything but an elected official. He said, "And so for all the baseball games and sporting events I missed. For the evening meals when I wasn't there and especially for the good night kisses that I didn't deliver, I apologize and I thank you for your understanding."
Thompson thanked everyone he served with during his time on the Wilmington City Council and then on the County Board of Commissioners.
He said, "There will always be those who will criticize you, tell you how you could have done better, what they would have done,
but always do your best. And I leave here tonight knowing that that's what I did, my very best."
Woody White and Beth Dawson were sworn in as New Hanover County Commissioners filling seats vacated by Ted Davis, Jr. and Jason R. Thompson. Re-elected Commissioner Jonathan Barfield, Jr. was also sworn in.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Dawson nominated White for the Chairman's seat. White nominated Dawson for Vice Chair. Both were elected unanimously.
Commissioner Brian Berger continues to serve on the Board. Just before the meeting was adjourned, Commissioner Rick Catlin resigned from the Board to prepare for his new position as legislator. He will represent North Carolina's 20th District in the State House.
