NEW HANOVER CTY - New Hanover County residents should mark their calendars and start cleaning out the garage for the annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day to be held on Saturday, March 30 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
This rain or shine event will be held at Wilmington International Airport – Customs Building located at 1987 Hall Drive.
Improper disposal of HHW is harmful to our health and natural resources.
HHW that is not disposed of properly may pollute our streams, rivers, drinking water and groundwater.
This waste can also interfere with the treatment process at the landfill and wastewater treatment plants. Proper disposal information on many household items can be found on our website at http://bit.ly/14QCW8g.
In addition to hazardous waste, residents may also bring their confidential documents to have them properly
Iron Mountain, a world leader in information management services, will be providing free onsite shredding.
The following items WILL be accepted at the HHW Event:
• Auto Batteries
• Motor Oil & Antifreeze
• Cell Phones
• Pesticides & Herbicides
• Household Cleaners
• Electronics (TV's, Computers, etc.)
• Fluorescent Tubes
• Rechargeable Household Batteries
• Smoke Detectors
• Mercury (thermostats/thermometers)
The following items WILL NOT be accepted at the HHW event:
• Propane Gas Cylinders
• Commercial/Business Waste
• SHARPS (hypodermic needles)
• Tires, Industrial Materials and trash.
Many items can be brought to the New Hanover County Landfill year-round. Auto batteries, motor oil, antifreeze, appliances, SHARPS and up to 5 tires per household (no businesses) can be dropped off at no cost.
The landfill is located at 5210 US Highway 421 North, and is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Liquid paint needs to be solidified by mixing sand or kitty litter with it to speed up the drying process.
It can then be collected with the normal household waste.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is coordinated by the Environmental Management Department of New Hanover County, City of Wilmington, Town of Wrightsville Beach, Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County, Iron
Mountain and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
