Town Request Bids To Build Expanded Fire Department

By WILLARD KILLOUGH III
Managing Editor

CAROLINA BEACH - The Town of Carolina Beach has advertised for bids from contractors for expansion of the existing Fire Department at Dow Road and Cape Fear Blvd.
This project includes the construction of a 5,785 square foot expansion to the existing fire department building, with a 70’ wide by 76’ deep pre-engineered metal building, adding four truck bays, sprinkler system and renovations to the existing facility. Phase Two of the project consist of renovations to the existing 7,488 square foot building after the Phase One addition is complete. Some of those items include converting the existing truck bays #1 and #2 to a classroom, renovations to the conference rooms, installing sprinkler fire suppression system throughout the existing structure and other renovations.
In this year's 2012-2013 fiscal buget, the Council budgeted for a $900,000 project with annual debt service at $84,000 a year for 15 years.
In recent years upgrades have been made to the facility after taking over the station from New Hanover County years ago.
Most recently the Department purchased adjacent land for expansion including a house on Cape Fear Blvd that serves as quarters for firefighters while on duty. That was part of a program that added full time fire fighters to the Department.
They also completed an upgrade to the second story of the station for additional sleeping quarters.
One reason for the expansion, the department has a 32' truck parked in a 34' foot bay and have hit the wall several times. It's a tight fit because over the years newer model fire trucks have increased in size.
Bid documents are available at Town Hall. Bids must be submitted by 2PM April 11. At that time the bids will be publicly opened and read aloud.
A 5% non-refundable bond is required as a guarantee that the Bidder will within ten (10) days after the date of the Bidder's receipt of the Notice of Award of a contract, execute an agreement and file same as required by the Contract Document if his Proposal is accepted.
There will be a mandatory pre-bid conference on Friday, March 22nd, at 10:00 a.m. at the Carolina Beach Fire Department Conference Room.
