On November 22, 2013 detectives with the Carolina Beach Police Department conducted a search of 409 Monroe Avenue, Unit B, in Carolina Beach in reference to a month long investigation into the sale, delivery and possession of MDMA commonly referred to as “Molly”.
A month long investigation revealed the suspects were importing MDMA from China using an under web browser, much like the black market website called “Silk Road”, which was seized by the Federal Government. The suspect was having the narcotics imported and was re-selling the narcotics using the anonymous currency “Bitcoins”. Over 850 hits of MDMA, over 70 hits of Mescaline, 14 grams of MDMA in raw crystal/powder form, marijuana, a small scale psilocybin mushroom grow operation, and a peyote cactus grow operation was located in the residence. A small amount of currency was seized on scene, however a larger amount of currency was seized in multiple bank accounts the suspect was using to filter the profits.
Detectives arrested Brandon Stanley Howell of 409 Monroe Avenue, Unit B, Carolina Beach, NC for trafficking in MDMA, 2 counts of Manufacture of a Schedule I, 2 counts of Possession with Intent to Manufacture Sale and Distribute a Schedule I, Maintaining a dwelling for the use/sale of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor child neglect. A female at the residence, Katherine Lynn Westbrook of 409 Monroe avenue, Unit B, was also charged with misdemeanor child neglect.
Brandon Howell was placed on a $100,000 bond and was confined in the New Hanover County Jail. Katherine Westbrook was charged via criminal summon and was not arrested.
