CAROLINA BEACH – Pleasure Island Celebrated New Year's 2014 at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk with live entertainment, lowering a lighted ball and fireworks display.
Large crowds enjoyed a live DJ and headed for their favorite Boardwalk business to celebrate the New Year with friends and family. The one tense moment of the night involved a power outage on the Fire Department's Ladder Truck that would lower a lighted ball at midnight.
Shortly before the coutdown firemen worked diligently to restore power from the truck to the lights, but ultimately Mayor Dan Wilcox retrieved additional extension cords from his home to reach up to the ball from a generator.
With minutes to spare, the power would come on and the crowd would cheer only to see the lights go on and off again. Finally everything was fixed; the ball was lit and lowered at midnight followed by a fireworks display.
The truck remained in place in the middle of Cape Fear Blvd because without power it could not retract the outriggers that hold it stable when the ladder is extended in the air. Crews worked overnight with the vehicle manufacturer. It was repaired the following day.
