Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service in Wilmington, NC. 11AM EST Thursday January 30, 2014:
Icy roads will bring dangerous commuting through Friday morning. Accumulations of ice still covers most roadways across the region. On many roads the sleet has transitioned to a solid sheet of ice one inch thick of more.
Not traveling is the safest option. If you must venture out, steer and brake and accelerate gently to avoid losing traction on icy roads. Leave plenty of distance between vehicles to prevent chain reaction pile-ups.
Partial melting is expected this afternoon, but much of this will re-freeze overnight into Friday morning. More substantial warming on Friday will allow better melting and vastly improved roadways into Friday afternoon.
