Charlotte Sponsel Rodger, of Kure Beach, passed away peacefully on August 10 after a brief illness. Born in Philadelphia, PA to German immigrant parents, Charlotte earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Temple University, where she was the President of her sorority, and was later employed as a legal secretary and executive assistant. While in college she met the love of her life, Alex, to whom she was married in 1950, and thereafter became a homemaker and mother to their three sons, Bruce, Ken and Byron. Following Alex’s retirement from an executive position at Scott Paper Company in 1992, Charlotte and Alex relocated from Pennsylvania to Kure Beach, where Charlotte quickly came to admire, and adopted, the gracious and gentle ways of the Pleasure Island community.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, Alex, and their three sons, she is survived by nine devoted grandchildren. A private Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Kure Memorial Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charlotte’s memory may be made to Kure Memorial Lutheran Church, 117 North Third Street, Kure Beach, NC 28449.
