Leo Ray “Pop” Champion, 79, of Carolina Beach, NC peacefully went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, September 2, 2012 . Leo was born on November 15, 1932 in Indianapolis, IN. The son of the late Hardin Champion and Elsie.
He is preceded in death by a daughter Kathy.
Leo is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kay Honeycutt Champion, daughter, Julie R. Thompson (John), son, Dennis K. Champion, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Leo graduated from George Washington High School in 1950. He then joined the Army and spent time in Korea. He retired from Western Electric in Indianapolis, after 30 years as a pipefitter. He shared a lot of laughs, card games and naps while on the job. His friends from work called him “Champ” and the name was more than appropriate.
Leo and the love of his life Kay, just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 14, 2012. They shared a love that grew stronger every day.
Leo will be missed by many. Anyone who met Leo loved him. He was such an easy going man. He never got angry and always had something kind to say. If you met Pop, you loved him. Pop loved his family so much.
Visitation will be at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel September 4 from 6-8 pm and a memorial service will be Wednesday September 5th at 11am at Kure Beach First Baptist Church officiated by Pastor Brian Langley.
