Michael Q. McGowan, 46, devoted husband, father, son, friend, and coach, 9210 River Road, Wilmington, NC, passed away October 9, 2012. Michael is survived by his wife, Shelly, sons Dylan and Davis, his parents, Fred and Dori Lightner, Wilmington, NC, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and Janet Arlensky, Wilmington, NC, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tafford and Beth Oltz, sister-in-law, Kim Schumann, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Michael graduated from Newport High School, Newport, PA, Johnson and Wales University, Providence, RI, Hershey Hotel Culinary Apprentice Program, Hershey, PA. Michael has worked at many excellent restaurants including at Colonial Country Club, Harrisburg, PA, as the Executive Chef where he met the love of his life. They relocated to Carolina Beach, NC, in 1997 and together accomplished a dream in 1998 by opening Michael’s Seafood Restaurant, Carolina Beach, NC, home of the 3 time award winning International Seafood Chowder Champions.
Michael was an avid sports fan, especially Baltimore Orioles, Washington Redskins, Duke Basketball, and most of all Penn State Football (through good times and bad).
Michael was involved in many charitable ventures, most prominently Michael’s Seafood Shrimp Open Golf Tournament which has raised over $400 thousand dollars for Cystic Fibrosis and the Duke Lung Transplant Program.
Visitation Sunday, October 14, 5 to 7 p.m., Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Rd., Wilmington, NC. Memorial service Monday, October 15 at 11 a.m. at Lifepoint Church, 3534 S. College Rd., Wilmington, NC.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Michael’s Shrimp Open Golf Tournament c/o Michael’s Seafood Restaurant, Carolina Beach, NC.
