KURE BEACH - Toshiko T. Nelms ("Tasha"), 80, of Kure Beach, NC, died Thursday, December 27, 2012. She was born in Kawasaki, Japan and migrated to the United States with her late husband, Lindsey ("Bud") Nelms in 1956. She was a devoted and beloved mother of five children: Albert (Joey) Nelms, of Indianapolis, IN, Jane Cannon of Charlotte, NC, Theresa Johns of Columbia, SC, Michael Nelms of Kure Beach, NC and Beverly St. George of Columbia, SC. After traveling with the United States Armed Forces, stationed to Fort Fisher Air Force Station, the family made Kure Beach their home in 1971 when Bud retired. Tasha worked for the late Charles Smith, owner of "Smitty's" restaurant in the 1970s before establishing "Bud and Joe's Bait and Tackle" with her husband, Bud. A year later, the fish market became the well known "Bud and Joe's Tavern " for 35 years. The seaside tavern expanded its hospitality into Carolina Beach for years and ultimately downsized to its original location on "K" Avenue in the heart of Kure Beach.
