Celia Applegate Sayles died October 11, 2013 in Fort Pierce, Fla. She was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1926.
She attended University of Toledo and University of Michigan graduating with a degree in Biology. She married William H. Sayles in 1947 and moved to Detroit, Mich. where they began their family. Moving to Florida in 1960 where she received a MA in Education from Stetson University in DeLand.
She was a lifetime master teacher specializing in working with children with disabilities. After retirement, she built a home in Carolina Beach, NC and spent time in both places.
She is survived by her children and their families Dr. William A. Sayles/Paige of Louisburg, NC, E. Marie Sayles-Lipscomb/Eddie of Key Largo, FL, Carol Sayles Anderson/Richard of Carolina Beach, NC and Cecelia Sayles Clark/Tom of Fort Pierce, FL.
Mom traveled the world until a terrible accident limited her mobility. She never met a stranger. She recognized that every person had a story to tell, and she listened to and learned from each she had the opportunity to meet.
She would literally and figuratively give you the shirt off her back. She advocated for and supported programs for women and children, being especially dedicated to child literacy and women's rights.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Celia on Sunday November 3, 2013 at 2 PM at the Katie B. Hines Senior Center in Carolina Beach, NC. Donations to the Adrian Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Ohio in her memory.
