Editorial: Another Successful Year; Looking Forward To 2014

By WILLARD KILLOUGH III

Happy New Year!
As we look back at 2013, it was a productive year for our community. The Town of Carolina Beach is moving forward with much needed infrastructure improvements for aging water and sewer lines.
The Town of Kure Beach's new oceanfront park was finally completed and has been a welcome addition to the downtown area along with a new oceanfront wooden boardwalk.
The Town of Carolina Beach is working on a project in 2014 to improve their downtown oceanfront boardwalk while adding other amenities.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (with some encouragement from Kure Beach Mayor Dean Lambeth) completed a project to widen and improve Dow Road on Pleasure Island.
The Snow's Cut Bridge Preservation Project that we've become accustom to since 2012 will hopefully be completed in February of 2014 and the bridge will continue to be safe for decades to come.
In 2014 several important issues will continue to confront New Hanover County and the beach towns; beach nourishment and inlet maintenance.
Those two issues are vital to our local tourism based economy. Funding is key and leaders will need your help to lobby local, state and federal leaders for continued funding.
Wilmington finished their North 3rd Street Improvement Project and the overall appearance is a definite improvement.
From everyone at the Island Gazette, we wish you a Happy New Year and look forward to continuing to serve our community in 2014.
