Spring is here and for many people in the Cape Fear region, this means one thing: The once docile waterways of winter are soon to be a buzz with the sound of boaters enjoying our beautiful river, intracoastal waterway and the effervescent waters of the Atlantic. For one local organization, the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron, it's time to get busy helping everyone enjoy their boating ventures by educating vessel operators and performing safety checks on the boats to assure we all have a fun and safe boating season.
Having been in existence for approximately 50 years, the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron is a non-profit unit of the United States Power Squadron that serves the general public in our area with power and sail boating education as well as performing safety checks on boats and awarding certification stickers recognized by the US Coast Guard. It's members are hard working volunteers that also host a number of fun events for boaters and spectators alike.
Carol Johnson, a local member, states the upcoming American Boating Course will be offered May 4 from 8a.m. to 5 p.m. and May 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this year. She explains the cost of the course is $50.00 and will cover three main topics: the handling and operation of powerboats; education of our local waterways; culminating with a boat tour on the water and a certificate of completion.
The Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron will also be offering its free safety inspection decals to boaters this season. Future dates and inspection stations will be posted on their website; Also keep check on their webpage for upcoming events including the Raft Up to be held May 25 and 26 at Mooring Field in Carolina Beach.
