2012 “Athletic Excellence” Banquet held to honor Senior Athlete’s at Ashley High School

This past Tuesday Night (5/29/12) Senior Athlete’s at Ashley High School were recognized for their achievements over the past 4 years at the Class of 2012 “Athletic Excellence” Banquet. Before the Awards Banquet, the Senior’s, their parents, coach’s and special guests enjoyed a nice buffet provided by the Courtyard By Marriott at Carolina Beach. Following the dinner Ashley High School ‘s Athletic Director, Roy Turner got the awards ceremony started with the Class of 2012 music video.
Among the Awards given out were: Scholar-Athlete Award – Senior male and female with scholar / athlete (GPAx14 + Athletic Points); Senior Outstanding Athlete Award – Awarded to the outstanding male and female athlete with the most athletic points in 4 years; Top Ten Scholar-Athletes: Awarded to the top five male and female athletes with the highest scholar-athlete index (GPAx14 + Athletic Points);  Top Ten Senior Athletes – Awarded to the top 5 male and female athletes with the most athletic point in 4 years; Iron Eagle Award - Awarded to any senior student-athletes that letter in each sport season (fall, winter & spring) their senior year; Andy Wheeler Award – Awarded to the senior athlete that most exemplifies leadership, character, and selflessness dedication to Ashley Athletics and the Golden Eagles award- Awarded to a member of our staff for their behind- the-scenes accomplishments and contributions, (compassion, generosity, loyalty, persuasiveness, support, trust, wisdom, etc.) by each graduating class of student-athletes.
The 1st Awards presented were the top 10 Scholar Athletes and they were: Mason Boyles, Cole Carter, Dan Di Gioia, Josh Hancock, John Hare Grogg, Crystal Harrell, Lauren Pietrzykowski, Chance Shepard, Julianne Spencer, and Johanna White. The Top Female Scholar Athlete of the year went to Crystal Harrell, who participated in 3 varsity sports all 4 years. The Top Male Scholar Athlete was Cole Carter. Carter lettered in Cross Country and Track all 4 years.
The Next Award was the “Iron Eagle”, which is given to any Senior athlete that letters in all three seasons their Senior Year. The Recipients were: Cole Carter, Dana Di Gioia, Crystal Harrell, Maya Jarvis, Alyssa Overton, and Morgan Thomas. The Andy Wheeler Award is given out in recognition for the former Athletic Director of Eugene Ashley High School.  This award has been given out since 2006 to a Student- Athlete “For exemplary leadership, character, and a selfless dedication to Ashley Athletics.” The 2012 Recipient was Christian Wolfe.
“The Golden Eagle” is awarded to a member of our staff for their behind the scenes accomplishments and contributions, (compassion, generosity, loyalty, persuasiveness, support, trust, wisdom, etc.) by each graduating class of student-athletes and staff. This years recipient of the “Golden Eagle Award” was Debra LeCompte, President of the Ashley Athletic Booster Club.
The Top 10 Athletes were recognized next and they were: Mason Boyles, Cole Carter, Dan Di Gioia, Crystal Harrell, Alyssa Overton, April Powers, Chance Shepard, Julianne Spencer, Brandon Tranchon, and Christian Wolfe. The Senior Outstanding Female Athlete for the Class of 2012: played 3 sports at Ashley and holds many school records. She will be attending Lynchburg College to play volleyball - Crystal Harrell.  The Senior Outstanding Male Athlete for the Class of 2012: Also played 2 sports at Ashley and holds many school records.
This Athlete will be attending N.C. State University in the fall and playing baseball. The year’s winner was Chance Shepard.
The Ashley High School Booster Club presented (4) $1,000 Scholarships to the Class of 2012. The Athletes had to write an essay on what it meant to me an athlete at Ashley High School. The scholarships were presented to: Josh Hancock, Rebecca Sherrill, Grayson Smith, and Danielle Sphar.
The 90 seniors that lettered in at least one sport in the Class of 2012 had a combined weighted GPA of (3.57) and 56 of the 90 (62%) were scholar-athletes. The Ashley Athletic Booster Club recognized each scholar athlete in attendance and distributed Scholar Athlete Honor Cords to each athlete.  Congratulations to all our senior athletes and good luck in the future.  Go and do what you have been taught to do and always show your Screaming Eagle Pride and Respect! Soar to New Heights!

Jordan Mille,  Meaghan Noxon, Alyssa Overton, Lauren Pietrzykowski, April Powers, Tara Robert, Kelsey Robertson, Khadjah Samuels, Chance Shepard, Rebecca Sherrill, Myles Smith, Julianne Spencer, Danielle Sphar, Danielle Stallings, Brian Stokes, Hannah Taylor, Evan Tello, Eriell Thomas, Jordan Thompson, Justin Wain, Skye Westra, Johanna White, and Christian Wolfe.
