The Screaming Eagles Varsity Football team got off to a great start in the Home Opener against South Brunswick this past Friday Night after scoring on their opening drive. The Eagles were able to return the opening kick off to mid-field, then a few play later Quarterback Chris Kane was able to sneak in for a touchdown from 2-yards out.
The Eagles were up 6-0 after a missed extra point. The Eagles were able to take a 14-7 lead after Kane connected on a pass to Charles Dent. The Eagles converted the 2-point conversion Khaleel Truesdale run. South Brunswick was able to quickly tie up the game at 14-14 after a 1-yard run.
The next points didn’t come until Ashley took a 20-14 lead with just under 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter when Kane rushed from 15 yards out for his 2nd touchdown. The Eagles defense allowed another touchdown by South Brunswick, and after the extra point they had a 1-point lead 21-20. The Eagles offense was able to score another much-needed touchdown. This time it was Quincy Rhodes (ended the game with 10 carries for 157 yards, 15.7 yards per carry) who went 56-yards for the go ahead touchdown 26-21.
The Eagles were able to regain possession, but a costly turnover (their 1st of the game) led to a Damani Johnson 21 TD run for 28-26 to start the 4th quarter. The Cougar’s then got another bid defensive stop and looked to put the game out of reach after a 5-yard run with giving them a 36-28 lead with just under 8:00 left in the game.
Then the Eagles got their running game going. After marching down the field the Eagles QB Kane rushed in for his 3rd TD with 1:17 left in the game. The Eagles opted for the 2-point conversion to tie up the game. Kane was able to drop back and find Trey Eller for the conversion bringing the score to 34-34.
In Overtime the Eagles won the toss and let the Cougars receive 1st. They were able to march right down the field and score on a Jahkhrill run, followed by the extra point.
This didn’t stop the Eagles from doing the same thing, but it was the Eagles QB’s 1 yard run for his 4th of the game that put the Eagles within a point of the tie or 2 for the win.
Eagles Coach’s decided on the 2-point conversion and the win, but game up 2-yards short giving South Brunswick the win 41-40 in Overtime. The Eagles are now 0-2 on the season and will be on the road next Friday Night at Trask!
