The Boys in the start of the Open Race.

The Screaming Eagles Cross Country Teams had 1 last double Race Week before starting their last 6 weeks of training before the Regional and State Championships.
The Eagles competed in a meet Thursday at Hugh McRae Park against New Hanover, Laney and Hoggard. Despite being down 1 Varsity Member and taking it easy for the Patriot Invitational to be held Saturday the Boy’s team still won easily over 2nd Place Laney who finished with 42 points. The Eagles finished with 23-points, 6 runner’s were in the top 10 and 9 in the top 15. The team scores were: Ashley 23, Laney 42, Hoggard 62, and New Hanover 110. The top 10 overall finisher’s were: Calvin Daughtry L 16:58, 2nd Place Stephen Wilson A 17:56, 3rd Brien Lancaster A 18:26, 4th Ben Schmidt H 18:28, 5th Bryan Veals A 18:36, 6th Daniel Lancaster A 18:42, 7th Joe Harty A 18:43, 8th Shane McDonough L 18:45, 9th Will Mayo A 18:46, and 10th Erik Paulson 18:48. The Girls also competed in the meet, but were running a tempo run in preparation for Saturday’s Meet.
During the Pirate Derby Invitational was held Saturday in Raeford, NC at the Carolina Horse Park. The course is arguably one of the most challenging courses in the state with several rolling hills before the 1st mile. The 1st race up was the Boy’s J.V. Race, which went off at 9AM with temperatures already pushing mid to high 80’s and high humidity. This didn’t stop the Eagles from putting in solid performances. The fastest Eagle in this race was Cody Benton who finished in 8th Place with a time of 19:05. Cody is usually on the Varsity Team but is recovering from a slight injury, one of 2 Varsity members not in the Varsity Race. The rest of the Eagles times and places in this race were: 20th Jordan Powell 19:53, 21st Nathan Mercer 19:57, 38th Chris Avery 20:29, 49th Vaughn Rizzo 20:42, 64th Brandon Nix 21:30, 75th Gray Wilson 21:54, 77th Dylan Merten 21:56, 79th Marshall Skelton 22:01, 85th Adam Ortega 22:11, Rodrick Allen 22:39, Austin Bailey 23:32, Nick Galonka 23:33, Dylan Secero 23:37, Loch McDonald 24:10, Ben Jackson 24:11, David Elrod 24:44, Trent Hollandsworth 25:16, James Avery 27:11. The Boys finished 1 spot out of taking home a plaque in 4th Place, just a few points behind Hoggard who was 3rd, South View was 2nd and host team Pinecrest was 1st Place. Times were estimated to be between 1:00-3:00 slower depending on the runner due to the challenging course and high temps. Next up was the Girls Open Race. The fastest Eagle in this race was Madison Smith who finished in 34th Place 26:36. The other ladies times and places were: 35th Elizabeth Troutwine 26:36, 41st Abigail Efting 26:57, 46th Brittney Synakowski 27:17, 51st Emily Troutwine 27:43, 53rd Meghan Chinn 27:45, 65th Koula Fragos 28:43, 72nd Katie Carter 29:13, 76th Ashley Merritt 29:27, 78th Bailey Williams 29:35, 82nd Hanna Topping 29:41, and 83rd Haliee Kiesecker 29:42. The girls also finished in 4th Place out of 9 teams.
The Boy’s Championship race followed in what would be a preview of the Regional Championship to be held on the same course Saturday, October 27th. Unfortunately for the Eagles they were done two of their top 5 runner’s, (one out sick the other in the JV Race) and another running sick. But that didn’t stop the Eagles from giving it their all and it was obvious from the onset of the race that they were there to prove something. Brian Lancaster & Joe Harty started with the lead pack of 10 with Bryan Veals closely behind and this held until the 1st mile. The other 4 Eagles were in a group about 15 seconds off the leaders. At the 2nd mile Lancaster and New Hanover’s George Webb were working together to try to catch up to 1st place with Harty not far behind and Veals within seconds also. The 2nd group of Eagles (Will Mayo, Daniel Lancaster, Rylee Smith and David Fletchner) was only 30 seconds off Veals at the 2 mile mark. Shortly after the 2 mile mark the Eagles had one more rolling hill before entering the Horse Park and tackling the last .75 of a mile. At the finish Lancaster finished just a few seconds behind New Hanover’s Webb in 3rd Place with a time of 17:19, Harty was 11th Place 17:45, Veals was 18th Place 18:03, followed by a pack of Eagles: 36th Will Mayo 18:49, 37th Daniel Lancaster 18:49, and 38th Rylee Smith 18:53. As a team the Eagles were able to finish in 3rd Place with 105 Points, Behind Pinecrest (ranked 8th in the state) 32 and South View (ranked 19th in the state) with 58. This was the 1st Plaque the Ashley Cross Country team has earned in a Invitational. After this weekend the Eagles are now ranked 24th in the State, 18th in the NCHSAA 4A, 3rd in the Region and 1st in the Conference.
The last race up was the Ladies Championship race that featured some of the best teams in the state. The Eagles were led in this race by the freshmen duo Julia Boudreau and Lindsey Williams. Boudreau and Williams both got good starts and were able to find the top 20 early in the race and hold on throughout the 1 and 2 mile marks. In the last mile both girls were able to make up ground with Julia finishing 11th Overall with a impressive time of 21:56. Williams was not far off in 21st Place with a time of 22:45. The rest of the Ladies times and places were: Morgan Marraccini 24:34 46th Place, Erica DeSousa 24:41 48th Place, Jillian Yankey 26:03 55th and Maggie Shibley 26:35 57th Place. The Ladies finished 6th out of 9 teams and are now ranked 10th in their Region. The girls are trying to cut it down to top 4 by Regionals so they can be the 1st team in School History to quality for the State Meet.
The Eagles have 1 meet this week, Thursday starting at 4:30PM at Laney High School.
